As much as I liked Venice, I have to admit that Florence
absolutely took my breath away. I had no idea what to expect, but the open,
less compacted city streets and relatively pleasant weather were two main
factors that made this place more favorable in my opinion. I really enjoyed
being able to walk in the streets without feeling cramped or claustrophobic,
and I definitely liked not having sea legs all day every day from traveling on
the water.
It was so wonderful that I got to spend my birthday in
Florence and the villa in Tuscany too. I could not have asked for a more
perfect way to celebrate turning 20 years old. Everyone was so kind and happy
for me and it just made everything about May 19th, 2013 even better.
It’s been quite a long time since I’ve felt as welcome and loved as I felt when
everyone sang happy birthday to me back at the villa that night. I want to
thank all of the people that I am sharing this May term trip with for being so
kind and uplifting and for truly making my 20th birthday that much
more perfect. And the homemade “birthday tiramisu” was too delicious to put
into words. :)
I have to say that my favorite part of Florence was the open
air market, because you could find such amazing deals there without a lot of
difficulty, and you could haggle the prices even lower most of the time
(although I did not really haggle for much of anything there). I also really
liked the architecture of the city buildings, especially ones like the Duomo,
because they are so interesting to look at and one can easily admire all of the
intricate details that they contain. On top of all of that, seeing all of the
artwork and culture in Florence (both in the museums and other attractions and
in a more casual setting on the streets) has increasingly inspired me to get
back into making art once again. I even sat down at the Pitti Palace for a
while and tried to do an observational sketch of part of the city landscape.
